Howto: Jiayu G3 Rooting + Custom ROM

Jiayu G3

Jiayu G3 has a very limited subset of languages that other vendors (Samsung, HTC) support so I decided to root the smart phone and install some alternative ROM to see if additional languages (Finnish) could be installed in the process.

Rooting

Install Mobileuncle Tools via Google Play to see if your device is already rooted or not. If it is not, Mobileuncle tells it quite straightforward:

If your device is not rooted, there is a great tutorial on Youtube how to root Jiayu G3. Follow the easy steps shown in the video:

  1. Install PDAnet for Android (32bit | 64bit) to get the drivers
  2. Set Jiayu G3 into USB Debug Mode
  3. Download and extract the bat file
  4. Start command prompt as an admin
  5. Execute the bat
  6. Select “Restore my data” on G3

After the rooting you can verify the result:

Root for MTK Droid Tools for Backup

You need to root the device for MTK Droid Tools to be able to take backup of the current ROM. First you need to install VCOM drivers, there is a guide how to do it:

  1. Open up USB Deview.
  2. Select MTKxxx and uninstall them by clicking the trash can icon.
  3. Reboot
  4. Remove battery from phone and connect via USB. Select VCOM drivers provided in the guide.

Backup Current ROM

In xda-developers.com forum there is a detailed guide how to make the rooting for MKT Droid Tools. Follow the instructions carefully and you will have the stock ROM backed up and enabled full system backup in MKT Droid Tools.

Backup Your System

There is a good guide on gsmhosting.com forum how to make a full system backup. Please note that you need to have a memory card attached to the phone. It takes about an hour. With this process you can also restore the system in case something goes wrong in the installing of a custom ROM.

Check your current ROM build from System Settings → About phone → Build number. Mine had G3N 20130223-071508. Write it down for later reference if you need to download the original ROM and restore it. You can backup your system using ClockWorkMod’s backup function.

Install ClockworkMod & Upgrade to Custom ROM

Jiayu G3 Cyanogenmod
ClockworkMod is a special boot mode that can be used to backup/restore Android systems or to flash software upgrades. ClockworkMod is required to get G3 into a special boot mode where a newer version of Android (4.1.2 Jelly Bean) can be written to the flash. There is an excellent tutorial in Youtube how to install ClockworkMod. Follow the easy steps shown in the video:

  1. Place the ClockworkMod image file (recovery_cwm5.5.0.4_ENG.img) in the memory card root.
  2. Place the custom ROM as a compressed zip file in the memory card root. From the video description ROMs I tried Signed_g3_4.12_0214.zip, but it did not support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or GPS because mine is G3N not G3 so I tried Lolfisch 1.1 instead. Lolfisch is based on popular custom Android ROM Cyanogenmod.
  3. Place gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip in the memory card root. Gapps are Google proprietary applications that are not part of Android OS and must be installed separately. Google Apps include Google Play, Youtube, Gmail, Google Drive, Chrome, Google Maps and Google+, among others. Every app can be also installed via Google Play, if you have Google Play installed :).
  4. Follow the instructions on the video to boot into recovery mode and select the custom ROM.
  5. Use Volume Up/Down to navigate in the ClockworkMod (CWM) mode and the power button is the “Select”.
  6. Choose “Install zip from SD card” and select the ROM file.
  7. After it has been installed don’t exit the program yet but install gapps.
  8. Then go back and choose “Reboot to recovery”, don’t long-press the power button.
  9. Other languages can be enabled by installing “More Locale 2” or similar via Google Play.

Jiayu G3 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

Conclusion

With the Cyanogenmod based Lolfisch ROM I could get the Jiayu G3N more stable and some basic language support for Finnish. The UI is not nearly 100% translated but it may help especially the elderly. The upgrade process was lengthy but it was worth it.
