NOS Energy Drink is a fairly unknown energy drink brand in Europe. It is produced by the Coca-Cola Company and it is named after Nitrous Oxide Systems that is used to give performance boost to racing cars. What a clever idea!

The Ingredients

NOS Sugar Free has plenty of citric acid that is used to give food and beverages a sour taste. It is second in the ingredients list meaning that there is only carbonated water more than citric acid. Other ingredients are well known from other energy drinks, including Taurine, L-Carnitine, Caffeine and Ginseng root extract.

The fruity flavor presumably comes from natural Passionfruit that is used in the drink. It probably gives some sweetness to it as well. Other sweeteners are inositol (that belongs to the sugar alcohol/polyol group), Acesulfame K (listed as “Acesulfame Potassium”) and sucralose. Other noteworthy substance is glycerol ester of wood rosin (or ester gum) that it used in soft drinks as an emulsifier and stabilizer.

Smell and Taste

The smell is really fresh and fruity, it resembles grapefruit and lemon. It is also sweet. The taste is unlike in any previous energy drink that I have tested: it is also really crisp and fruity, a hint of sour as well. The drink is well carbonated so it quenches thirst and gives you a fresh feeling. On the other hand it is really sweet so it may take away your craving for candy or other sweets.

NOS Sugar Free is a refreshingly different energy drink and would be a nice addition to the selection of energy drinks in Europe. It is also extremely low-carb so it would interest people on a hardcore low-carb diet.

Where to Buy?

I have found this only in the German web store where one 16 fl.oz. (473 ml) can costs 3.50 € ($4.20) and it is much more expensive than the regular energy drinks that are available in the grocery stores (e.g. Monster costs about 2 € a can).
