Howto: Installing WordPress on Synology DS211j

Before reading: If you don’t know what a NAS is and what can you do with it, the guys at Cloudwards have written a nice introduction: What is a NAS? A Practical Guide.

With the DiskStation Manager (DSM) software v. 3.2 upwards it is possible to install WordPress using the Admin account’s Package Center. It will, however, install only one “master” instance of WordPress. Luckily installing WordPress blog engine for different users on Synology DS211j NAS station is pretty straight forward. Just follow the steps as I will walk you through the process:

  1. First enable the User Homes feature.
  2. Install phpMyAdmin either via Package Center of manually.
  3. Download the latest WordPress installation package from the WordPress site (v. 3.2.1 as of writing this). You may download it directly onto the NAS, using the Download Station or download it to your computer and transfer it to Synology. I downloaded it directly to DS211j using the Download Station as the NAS supports extracting of ZIP archives.
  4. Extract the archive to your www-home (/home/www if using the Synology Web UI File Browser, /volume1/homes/[username]/www if accessing the directory directly), name it as you wish.
  5. Create a database for WordPress with phpMyAdmin (use collation utf8_unicode_ci), as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it. Make sure the MySQL user has “Local”(localhost) selected for Host.
  6. Mount your www directory from Synology locally to enable easier file edits.
  7. Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php and fill in the database details & secret salt keys. You may use WordPress Secret Key Service to generate the keys for you.
  8. Open the installation script with your browser: http://[your-nas-address]/~[username]/[wordpress-directory]/wp-admin/install.php and provide the required information.
That’s it, enjoy!
